Short Summary

Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret was written by Judy Blume in the 70’s and has become a crowd favourite over the years. It has been updated since the original release, with a more tech-savvy approach that current tweens can better relate to.

What This Book Is About

The book narrates how Margaret talks to God as she turns from 11 to 12 and goes through new experiences. Because she feels embarrassed to talk to anybody else, she decides to talk to God about:
  • Growing up with a Christian mum and a Jewish dad
  • Boys, bras and menstruation and how she isn’t developing as quickly as her peers
  • Being self-conscious and how she observes her peer’s behaviours and actions
  • Dealing with family issues and conflicts
In the end, she thanks God for listening to everything that she has to say and for being there for her through every story.

Reflection and Comments

There’s a very good reason why this book has been a hit since it was first released. Margaret’s words on those pages echo the thoughts of any adolescents going through physical, emotional, and social changes.

It also helps that the book shows how Margaret struggles to find her own identity and find clarity in what beliefs she wants to have. It does show that Margaret resumes her conversations with God later on, giving readers a good lesson on how they can be flexible and change their minds especially when it comes to things that could affect the way they see the world.

We also love how it talks about Margaret’s insecurities. It gives the lesson that everybody’s unique and that these differences make you special.
