Short Summary

Baby on the Way was written by William Sears, MD, Martha Sears, RN, and Christie Watts Kelly for kids aged 6 to 7 and illustrated by Renee Andriani. The book was created for the Sears Children’s Library as a resource for siblings who will soon be big brothers or sisters.

What This Book Is About

There’s a buzz of excitement to welcome a new baby. Families are usually getting ready, putting everything into place and preparing for the new addition.

This picture book answers any soon-to-be big brother or sister’s questions about:

  • The changes to expect around their home
  • How it feels like to grow inside the mum
  • How mum feels now that she has a baby inside her
  • How kids can help while they’re waiting for their sibling

Reflection and Comments

The book gives concrete examples that kids can easily understand. For example, it describes morning sickness as similar to eating too much cake and ice cream. Though the book does not talk about how the baby was made or how it’s going to get out, it explains how the baby develops inside and the small things kids can do to help their parents out while waiting for the baby to come.
