What This Book Is About
Boys & Sex highlights interviews that the author had with many young men in an effort to hear their challenges as they navigate life towards adulthood. She looks at specific problems, like the easy access to porn and dealing with “bro culture”. Other aspects that the book discusses include:
- Locker room talk
- Sex education and pornography
- The role that empathy plays
- Hookup culture
- How boys understand consent
- Sexual assault
It gives a view of the sexual culture men are navigating, allowing us to guide the young men in our lives with with better understanding of what they are experiencing.
Reflection and Comments
After looking at the challenges young women have to deal with – like being overly sexualised the author gives us a chance to better understand boys and men. For example looking at how men are expected not to show emotions. The great thing about this book is that it is evidence based as the content comes from actual conversations with young men, plus the insights of psychologists, educators and other experts.
