Short Summary

Consent is something we need to talk to kids about from the moment they are born. With this book, author Eleanor Morrison helps make these conversations easier.

What This Book Is About

C is for Consent is a board book that teaches kids about consent and boundaries through a short story about a small party. Through the story, kids can learn:

  • That it’s okay to say no to a hug or a kiss
  • That it’s okay if you don’t want to sit on someone’s lap if you don’t want to
  • That there are other ways to greet people, like a high five or a fist bump
  • That you also need to respect other people’s boundaries
  • That even the grown-ups  need to ask a child for consent

The book also has helpful questions at the end to guide parents and carers of children.

Reflection and Comments

This is a sturdy board book, that you could really take everywhere even in your child’s pram. Using consent in everyday language starting from birth, helps you practise and normalises consent conversations. It’s also great that the illustrations are very inclusive, giving a clear picture of diversity. It has images of people with different skin colour, an uncle in a wheelchair, and same-sex couples.

It tells kids that it’s okay to say no when someone, even if it’s a family member, wants a kiss or a hug. It suggests other alternatives, like high fives and fist bumps. It doesn’t explain, however, what to do if someone is being really insistent in doing so. The great thing about this book is that it opens up the opportunity for you to discuss this further with your kids. You can use the discussion questions at the back of the book and add your own input as well.
