Short Summary

This book by Dr Gail Saltz was first published in 2007. It is a follow up to the popular companion called ‘Amazing You’. As kids start growing up they experience so many changes that can be difficult, so talking about puberty at an early age prepares them and normalises conversations.  This book talks about how these changes happen, but also anatomy, sexual intercourse, reproduction and emerging sexuality.

What This Book Is About

‘Changing You’ reminds kids aged 6 to 8 that their bodies are amazing and normal as they change and grow. The book talks very simply about:

  • The right names of genitals and what happens during puberty
  • The physical changes and feelings that come with puberty
  • Reproduction, sexual intercourse.
  • Pregnancy and birth
  • Tips about body safety
  • Sexual feelings

As with any other book authored by Dr. Gail Saltz, the book is filled with practical advice and uses fun and age-appropriate language.

Reflection and Comments

This book may be over a decade old, but is still very relevant. We love how it acknowledges the different feelings that come with puberty in an age appropriate way.

The illustrations used in the book are gorgeous and appealing. It does only show a circumcised penis, so you may need to explain to your child how many boys aren’t circumcised.

It does not talk about IVF or different families and it also doesn’t talk about other ways that parents could have children, like adoption or surrogacy. In terms of childbirth, it discusses both vaginal birth and caesarian birth.

It’s also nice to see a discussion about having sexual feelings. This is something that is a natural part of puberty, so knowing something like this at a young age will help kids understand that this is normal once they start having these feelings for themselves.
