Short Summary

This book dives right into this topic of menstruation and helps young girls understand why and how it happens.

What This Book Is About

Cycling to Grandma’s House tells the story of Luna, a young girl whose task it is to find the best thing about being a girl and present it to class. Following her mum’s suggestion, she set off on a journey to find out more about menstruation.

Luna rode her bike around town and spoke to women of different backgrounds and ethnicity. She found out about their different experiences when they first had their period. There were women from Japan, Papua New Guinea, Ghana, Australia, India and Great Britain. Luna ended her journey at her Grandma’s house, who is of Mexican descent.

When Luna presents her report, her classmates ask her different questions like:

  • What the process is about
  • How different they will they feel once it starts
  • How different cultures experience menstruation

Reflection and Comments

This book discusses something that’s usually considered taboo. It helps young girls realise that this is normal and nothing to be ashamed of, regardless of their background.
