Short Summary

Hair and the fact that it starts growing in funny places is a picture book about puberty for young children. Leave it to Babette Cole’s usual wit to make this a fun read.

What This Book Is About

‘Hair in Funny Places’ tells the story of a girl who asked her teddy bear how she’s going to turn into a grownup. Being the trustworthy friend that he is, the bear proceeds to explain puberty and talks about these details:

  • Hormones and how they help turn kids into grownups
  • The changes happening to a girl’s body during puberty
  • The changes happening to a boy’s body during puberty
  • Hormones and their role in attraction, falling in love, and eventually having kids

Reflection and Comments

This book is a fun read and although not always accurate, it’s a story that can help you to start conversations with your child about puberty from a young age in order to normalise and open up conversations in the future. The way puberty is explained is entertaining, with characters like Mr. and Mrs. Hormones who are actually grumpy, hairy and pimply. It explains puberty in a way that’s not awkward, making it easier for kids to accept that these changes are natural and are nothing to be overly conscious about.
