‘How Did I Begin’ talks simply about reproduction and about their development in utero. It covers topics like:

  • How the egg and the sperm meet
  • Reproduction but not IVF
  • How babies develop inside the womb
  • How chromosomes and genetics work
  • How twins are formed
  • Birth vaginal and caesarean

This book serves as a great way to start conversations about how your child began.

Reflection and Comments

The illustrations are fun and the text is age-appropriate. If you’re a parent who feels a bit awkward about talking to their young kids about sex, this book helps remove that awkwardness and helps turn it into something fun and educational. It starts off by explaining that parents have a “special cuddle”. It does talk about sexual intercourse in a simple, factual way, to explain how the sperm goes into the egg. It talks about how babies are made but also about how babies develop inside the womb. It even has a diagram showing the baby’s average size as it gets bigger. It does not talk about the fact that some babies aren’t born into the family’s they’re in. It also doesn’t talk about IVF. Despite that, it is a starting point for any family.
