Short Summary

It’s My Body was written by Lory Freeman and illustrated by Carol Deach for kids aged 3 to 8. Lory worked in early childhood and family therapy for a long time and has vast experience in dealing with high-risk toddlers and preschoolers.

What This Book Is About

Knowing how to set boundaries is in important thing to teach kids. Most adults never imagine their child being at risk. But it’s not just strangers we should worry about; our kids may feel uncomfortable around friends and family too.

Through this book, kids can learn how to protect themselves by knowing the importance of good vs bad touch. Some of the valuable lessons included in this book are:

  • A child has the right to refuse the touch of anybody, family and friends included
  • When a child is uncomfortable with somebody, they should feel safe enough to tell trusted adults about it
  • There are “touching codes” they can use to protect themselves when they feel they’re in trouble

Reflection and Comments

Although the book discusses protective behaviour that can help prevent potential abuse, it doesn’t talk about abuse nor does it openly reference any stories about it. Because the book is geared towards younger readers, it gives simple, straightforward explanations that empower them to to trust their instincts.
