Short Summary

Diversity is something we should talk about with our kids at the youngest possible age. ‘Just the Way We Are’ by Jessica Shirvington and Claire Robertson helps children to respect the different people, cultures  and families that there are.

What This Book Is About

This book shares the story of Anna, Chiara, Izzy, Henry and Jack – five kids with different families and backgrounds. Through their stories, our kids can learn the following:

  • There are similarities and differences if you compare families
  • There is nothing wrong with being different
  • Families may have unique traditions and things that they do together
Through this book, we can help our kids learn lessons of acceptance and belonging.

Reflection and Comments

One of the things kids notice when they start interacting with people outside your family are the things that are different between other families and yours. This makes these types of conversations a critical part of their development. This book   helps us address these questions in a way that focuses on respect and acceptance. Because the book shares stories of families. It tells our kids that it’s okay to be different because this makes everyone special in their own way.
