Short Summary

Puberty Girl was written by Shushann Movsessian for girls aged 12 and above. It was published in 2004.

Puberty comes with a lot of challenges for most girls. All the physical, emotional, and social changes can be a lot to deal with without the right support and resources. This book aims to help young girls deal with all the uncertainties that come with puberty and helps them go through this journey with confidence.

What This Book Is About

The book takes a fun and light-hearted approach to discussions surrounding puberty. The sassy language makes it more engaging especially to tweens and teenagers, and removes the awkwardness.

The book talks about things like:

  • Physical changes happening in the body
  • What happens during menstruation and how to deal with it
  • Staying healthy
  • Body safety and dealing with issues like bullying and sexual abuse
  • Protecting one’s body and speaking up
  • Solving conflict and being you.

The book also discusses why it’s important to talk about puberty and how to accept yourself and be confident. The images are photographs that are still relevant today.

Reflection and Comments

This book doesn’t talk about sexual intercourse or how babies are made but it does talk briefly about accepting sexual orientation. The book’s main focus is puberty. Everything is explained, helping readers to understand the entire process better.

It has a magazine-like feel to it, which could help pique the interest of reluctant tweens more.

It’s also great that this book discusses critical issues like having eating disorders or dealing with bullying, and even sexual abuse. The way these topics were discussed gives readers enough awareness without necessarily scaring or overwhelming them.
