Short Summary

For parents whose faith plays a huge role in the way they raise their kids, sex education can be a challenge. Decades of having traditional mindsets and practices have proven that these approaches cause shame, taboo and silence. The author, Dr. Doug Hammack, shows parents that they can still talk to their kids effectively from a faith-based perspective but without judgment.

What This Book Is About

Rethinking Sex Ed aims to eliminate the shame and judgment that usually comes with discussions about sex, especially for parents who are having a hard time in balancing their faith while building stronger relationships with their kids.

Some of the concepts discussed in the book include:

  • Exploring human sexuality through religious wisdom
  • Dismantling some of the concepts and rethinking some traditional thoughts about sex
  • Looking at a mix of religion, history, biology, and economics to shift perspectives
  • How to talk with our kids, masturbation and the problem with pornography.

Talking with your child from a faith perspective, can  actually be a part of  a healthy, sexual life.

Reflection and Comments

Sex has always been a controversial, if not taboo topic for many churches. What we love about this book is that it gives a clear narrative of why  beliefs of shaming sex or avoiding talking about sex is unhealthy. If we want our kids to make smart sexual decisions in the future, they need to know at a young age without sacrificing the values that we hope to instil in them. The book values building a close and open relationship with our kids, which will make relevant discussions about sex and body protection in the hope of normalising conversations. Aside from emphasising the fact that all this needs to be done from a place of love instead of shame and judgment, it also gives practical advice on what approach you can use when you talk to your kids about sex, pornography, and other similar topics, empowering them with information that will help protect them in the long run.
