Short Summary

It’s important to talk to about the changes that happen during puberty even before they start. That’s how this book can help.

What This Book Is About

‘Secret Boys’ Business’ by Stewart, Angelo and Anderon, helps parents, educators, or carers talk to young boys using age-appropriate language about what’s going to happen as they transition from being kids to young adults. Some of the topics discussed in the book are:

  • Why puberty happens
  • Physical changes like body hair, body odour, and having a deeper voice
  • Penises, erections and testicles
  • Differences between a penis with and without foreskin
  • Masturbation, sexual intercourse and how babies are made

The book also uses simple language with great illustrations that help kids understand the topics being discussed more clearly.

Reflection and Comments

Aside from the colourful illustrations throughout the book, everything is explained in an easy-to-understand way.

We like that  the book talks about masturbation, making it clear that some boys do it and some don’t. Same sex attraction is covered too. The changes that happen to girls in puberty are not mentioned in this book.
