Short Summary

This book is for caregivers of children from renowned sexuality educator Melissa Carnagey. The aim is to help you answer your child’s questions in an open shame- free way in order to build a stronger relationship so that they return to you for ongoing guidance and support.

What This Book Is About

Sex Positive Talks to Have With Kids guides parents by having over 150 conversation starters, activities and exercises that will help us approach often difficult discussions with more understanding and acceptance, whilst empowering everyone. Some of the topics discussed in the book are:

  • Sexual Orientation
  • Bodies and how they change
  • Menstruation
  • Feelings and emotions
  • Consent, boundaries, safe and unsafe touch
  • Pornography and media literacy
  • Gender identity
  • Relationships and feelings
  • Sex and pleasure

The book  will help normalise conversations about these topics in an open and positive way.

Reflection and Comments

This book is easy to read and very practical. Each chapter has a topic like body awareness. Within each chapter are topics like bodies and how they change, menstruation and masturbation. Then conversation starters, with answers from birth to 3 from 4-8, 9-12 and 13 and up, which you can use when talking with your child.

I love the reflections for parents and caregivers at the end of each section that make you think about the messages that you were given about the topics and the way that affects how you communicate with your child. The book can help you approach these discussions with more clarity and  help you in an age appropriate shame free, inclusive way, a different way to how many of us grew up right?
