Short Summary

Talking About Feelings was written by Jayneen Sanders for parents, carers and educators, and their kids aged 4 to 10 years old. Aside from being an author, Jayneen is also a mother and a primary school teacher. She’s a huge advocate for empowering kids to be the best version of themselves.

What This Book Is About

This book provides an opportunity for adults to help their kids understand and manage their feelings and emotions. Meant to be an interactive reading experience, it poses different points for discussion to help kids verbalise how they feel.

Some of the lessons included in this book are:

  • Everyone has feelings, both kids and adults.
  • Some feelings are really big that it could leave anyone confused about how to deal with them.
  • There are always trusted adults around who kids can talk to when they have big feelings.
  • Feelings could come from one’s own actions or thoughts, but they could also come from things that are happening around them or from other people.

Reflection and Comments

Helping kids understand their feelings and emotions also helps them become more confident and emotionally mature.  Because each page asks questions that kids can answer, it also helps them realise that they have a voice worth listening to and that their feelings are valid.

It also helps adults have a better understanding of how their kids are feeling and allows them to guide their kids on how to deal with these feelings. By setting a strong foundation on open communication through the exercises in this book, parents can also show their kids that they’re always willing to listen, especially when their kids start having even bigger things to worry about as they grow older.
