Short Summary

The Boy’s Guide to Growing Up was written by Phil Wilkinson for young boys aged 9 to 11. It takes a friendly and reassuring approach to puberty, helping readers answer the questions they have about their changing body and all the awkward questions they have in mind.

What This Book Is About

Puberty is one of the most critical stages in a boy’s life because this is where his transformation from a young boy to a young adult happens. This is also the stage where most boys find themselves wondering, “Is this normal?”, which can greatly affect their self-confidence. Through this book, they can finally find out why all of this is happening to their body and what other changes to expect.

The book discusses topics like:

  • What is puberty and when does it happen?
  • How do hormones work?
  • Changes in weight, height, voice, and skin
  • Growth of hair everywhere
  • Personal hygiene and grooming
  • The male reproductive organs and how they work
  • Dealing with new feelings
  • Sex
  • How to gain confidence
  • Healthy eating and exercise
  • What girls deal with during puberty

Reflection and Comments

The book has colourful pages that can capture the attention of any reader. More importantly, it shows accurate diagrams and illustrations showing the body and its parts, helping readers understand the biology behind their body.

It discusses sex in a manner that explains how babies are made, but it also does say that it’s not the only reason why adults have sex. For parents who feel that this is a topic they should skip for now, the book will still prove useful especially when it comes to explaining the different body parts and how to care for it. Then, parents can always come back to the book later when they feel their child is more ready to understand discussions about sex.

The overall tone is assuring and friendly, and it’s great how it explains everything in a manner that’s easy to understand. This is also helpful for parents who are unsure about what terms to use and how to explain it. The approach that this book uses somehow takes away that awkward feeling when discussing these topics and acknowledges that it’s normal to think that some of these topics are gross, but there’s a good scientific reason why all of this is happening.
