Short Summary

The Breast Book was written by Emma Pickett for young girls aged 10 and above.

Breasts play a huge role in most young girl’s development as they go through puberty. It is also can be a source of confusion, embarrassment, and insecurity. With this book, girls can get a better understanding of the when, the why, and the how of breasts in the context of puberty from a different perspective.

What This Book Is About

The book focuses on a topic that other puberty books would usually mention a few times, but would not really put put an emphasis on, breasts. It was published in 2019. It’s a collection of stories from teenagers, mums, and even a trans man about what their breast journey was all about. Knowing that this is such a pivotal part of a young girl’s development, it’s refreshing to finally see an author zero in on this.

Some of the topics covered by this book are:

  • The development of a young girl’s body from infant-hood to pre-puberty
  • Choosing the right bra
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • How society looks at breasts and is gender inclusive

Reflection and Comments

One might think that there’s not a lot to talk about when it comes to breasts, but this book proves otherwise. It takes a natural and normal approach to how mammals  feed their young by breastfeeding. It emphasises how this is a great bonding moment between a mother and a child.

It has that perfect balance between science and stories. It sticks to the facts when discussing how the breasts work, but the book is also filled with anecdotes from actual people as they share what their breasts mean to them.

It’s also great how it tells young readers to be excited and not feel ashamed, about their breasts and that everyone’s breasts size and shape are different, continually reassuring the young readers that this is all a normal process and has a purpose. It is also inclusive of gender and tells a story about a transgender man.
