Short Summary

‘The Care and Keeping of You’ has been one of the go-to guides for girls about puberty.

What This Book Is About

The book talks about the physical changes and the emotions that come with puberty. The topics covered by the book include:

  • Physical and emotional changes
  • Bras
  • Periods
  • Self care
  • Healthy body image
  • Self-esteem and positive mental health
  • Getting on with your family

The book also includes a few topics already covered by the first book, like choosing a bra, the importance of a healthy diet and getting enough sleep, and information on shaving one’s legs.

Reflection and Comments

This series is published by the conservative ‘American Girl’ franchise and written by Dr Cara Natterson. Just like the 1st volume, this book uses a friendly tone for its intended audience. It also carries the same approach – giving practical advice that girls who are going through puberty can easily understand and follow.

The book does not discuss sex, but it does use accurate illustrations of the different parts of the body. The diagrams showing the vagina, for example, shows the clitoris clearly, although it is not labeled.
