Short Summary

Talking about the things that go on during puberty is usually awkward, especially when it’s a conversation with parents, teachers, and sometimes, even friends. This book removes that awkwardness by delivering facts and useful tips about puberty in a witty and funny manner.

What This Book Is About

‘The Girl Guide’ by Marawa Ibrahim is packed with practical tips and fun illustrations that make relevant conversations a lot easier to talk about. This book covers the following:

  • How to make your body your best friend
  • How to deal with the different moods and emotions that come with puberty
  • How to care for the body by eating healthily and exercising
  • How to care for the skin
  • How to celebrate what’s unique about you

This book is pitched at girls aged 8 to 12, and covers many of the basics to help young girls as they go through puberty.

Reflection and Comments

There’s just too much happening all at once during puberty that it’s not surprising how young girls find it a challenge to deal with. The great thing about this book is that it touches on some of the topics that usually confuse girls, like having crushes and dealing with some of the feelings and responses that are new to them.

The book doesn’t really dive into the specifics of puberty though, especially when it comes to reproductive changes. This means that you might need another book or guide that could help your young daughter find out more about that side of the topic. With its practical tips about dealing with periods to wearing bras, it’s a great book to start with for girls who already have some idea about the reproductive system but would like some supplemental advice. The fact that it helps young girls to embrace their bodies makes this a valuable resource.
