Short Summary

The Girls’ Guide to Sex Education was written by Michelle Hope for girls aged 11 and up. Michelle is a sexologist and educator who uses a timely, relatable, and honest approach to help young people understand topics like puberty.

The book was published in 2018 and takes a question-and-answer approach, knowing that the questions will echo the same thoughts that run through almost every adolescent girl’s mind.

What This Book Is About

The book covers 5 main topics that the target audience would usually be most concerned about:

  • How to embrace the changes that come during adolescence and puberty
  • What actually happens during puberty
  • Girl stuff like bras and cellulite
  • Different types of relationships including family, platonic, and romantic ones
  • Sex, birth control, virginity and consent

Reflection and Comments

The book encourages young girls to have open conversations with “trusted knowledgeable adults” (TKAs), which may include parents, carers, or educators. That this is not a journey that they should be going through alone.

We all know that when kids don’t get the answers from the adults they trust, they turn to their peers or the internet.

The best part about this book is how modern and relatable it is. It answers over 100 questions, that teens ask in a direct factual way. It also tells them that when they do find a partner, giving them access to private social media accounts is not proof of love. It doesn’t just stick to the biological aspect of puberty. Instead, it approaches it from a real-life point of view, covering emotional and psychological aspects that, is just as important as knowing the physical aspects of growing up.
