Short Summary

The Not-So-Perfect Princess and the Not-So-Dreadful Dragon was written by Jayneen Sanders for kids aged 4 to 10. The author wrote this fairy tale as part of her advocacy in raising kids with empathy, kindness, and respect. A mother of 3 and and primary school teacher, she also advocates for body safety and gender equality.

What This Book Is About

Fairy tales normally tell stories about perfect princesses and terrifying dragons. But not this one. In this story, Princess Petal is the exact opposite of how people think princesses should be like!
  • She is not delicate and quiet.
  • She wears scruffy dresses and a woolly hat instead of pristine gowns and a crown.
  • She is not afraid of fire-breathing dragons.

Just as Princess Petal is unique, the dragon she encounters is also a big surprise. Instead of being terrifying, the dragon is friendly, kind and caring!

Reflection and Comments

This book teaches its young readers that stereotypes are not ok that we can’t make assumptions. It reminds them that they can be whoever they want to be regardless of what society says and thinks. It also shares the value of not judging others based on what they see on the outside.

The book also comes with guided questions at the back that parents, carers and educators can use to help kids learn more about equality, diversity, and empathy. In a world where there is still a lot of discrimination and intolerance, these questions help trusted adults have meaningful conversations with their kids to help them become kinder human beings.
