Short Summary

The Trouble with Secrets is a book about protective behaviors written by Karen Johnsen and illustrated by Linda Johnson Forssell for kids aged 4 to 10.

What This Book Is About

Secrets may sometimes seem exciting but they can be dangerous as well. In this book, kids can learn what kind of secrets they shouldn’t be keeping from their parents and other trusted adults. The things that should not be kept as a secret include:

  • Getting hurt while using dad’s tools
  • Breaking mum’s favorite vase
  • Getting hurt by somebody else

Reflection and Comments

The book tells kids that it’s okay to keep a secret if it’s about getting a surprise gift for mum or baking a batch of dad’s favorite cookies.

Helping kids learn which secrets are okay or not will help protect them from potential abuse and other risks. It also gives them the opportunity to think on their own and decide which situations are dangerous or not.
