‘What Makes a Baby?’ was published in 2012. This gender inclusive book states that it is for every kind of family and every kind of kid and talks about how babies are made without talking about sexual intercourse.

What This Book Is About

This very clever book gives you the adult, the opportunity to talk with your child about how they were made. Some of the things discussed in this book are:

  • Eggs and sperm and how people don’t have both
  • How babies need a place to grow and how some bodies have a uterus while other don’t
  • How babies get some characteristics from the sperm and while other characteristics come from the egg
  • How long it takes for a baby to grow
  • How babies come out, vaginal and caesarean
  • Why having a new baby is a big deal for everyone

Reflection and Comments

This book gives the opportunity for the adult to explain making a baby to their child and this could include families who went through adoption, IVF or surrogacy. This book is inclusive of gender and families as it does not mention a mum and a dad. The illustrations are vibrant and colourful, and inclusive of race and gender. It helps your kids embrace and respect everyone and  makes every child feel special.
