What’s Happening to Ellie was written by Kate Reynolds and illustrated by Jonathon Powell for kids aged 10 and up. Kate was a clinical nurse specialist, staff trainer and senior counsellor for the UK’s National Health Service for 18 years. Her son is in the autism spectrum and is an advocate for disability and sex education.

If you have kids within the autism spectrum, sometimes change can be a huge challenge for them. especially when they start going through puberty.  This makes this book a great resource because it slowly guides them through the process and empowers them (and the adults around them) with tips that could make it all easier to handle.

The book covers topics like:

  • Physical changes, like growing hair everywhere and getting bigger breasts
  • Dealing with different emotions
  • Maintaining good hygiene
  • Dealing with periods
