Short Summary

Who We Are is a book about diversity written by Robie Harris and illustrated by Nadine Bernard Westcott for kids aged 2 to 5.

What This Book Is About

There is always something unique about every person. These differences make us who we are. But for a child who is meeting new people, these differences could bring a lot of questions. This book helps assure them that these differences are normal and are making every person special in their own way.

The book tells a story about Gus, Nellie, Baby Jake, and their parents and how they observed the different people they saw during a trip to Funland. Some of the differences they saw include:

  • The shapes and colors of each person’s eyes
  • The color of people’s skins
  • People’s heights and the length of their hair
  • How well people see (and whether they need glasses or not)

Reflection and Comments

Because of these differences, the kids learned to appreciate the things that make each person special. They learned about the importance of treating everyone right regardless of how different they are.

The story is relatable for any type of family and can help families open meaningful discussions about diversity. The fun and colorful illustrations add value to the entire reading experience and help keep younger readers more engaged.
