10 Books About ‘Talking the Talk’ For Children

Back in the day ‘Where did I come from?’ by Peter Mayle was one of the only sex education books for primary school children around. It was so hard to say the ‘s word’ let alone get to talking about sex with your child and even then, it was ‘the talk’. The one and only talk about where do babies come from and that was it! Over!

Now, sex education at schools is very different and that’s a good thing. When it comes to ‘talking the talk’ some parents still find it difficult and that’s where a good sex education book is important. You don’t have to have the talk on your own, there is a book to help you open up positive ongoing conversations. There are so many wonderful books about how babies are made -it can be hard to choose. From toddler to teenage books about sex which one do you pick? Well it depends on age, comprehension, questions they ask and their reading level. Would they like to read a picture book, chapter book or a story? What are your faith or beliefs because there are also books that are about Christian sex education on my website.

Here are 10 books in order of recommended reading levels…

  1. ‘What Makes a Baby’ 3-7 years by Cory Silverberg is a book for every kind of family and every kind of kid about how babies are made
  2. ‘Amazing You’ 4 – 7 years by Gail Saltz  is written with warmth and honesty about how babies are made
  3. ‘What’s The Big Secret’  4 – 7 years by Laurie Krasny Brown gives the answers to kids’ most common questions about talking about sex, the human body, reproduction, and development.
  4. ‘The Amazing True story how babies are made’ 5 -8 years by Fiona Katauskas a funny book about where do babies come from
  5. ‘Where Willy Went’ 5 – 7 years by Nicholas Allan is a funny book about where did I come from
  6. ‘Let’s Talk About the Birds and the Bees’ 5-10 years by Molly Potter is about the facts of life (from how babies are made to puberty and healthy relationships)
  7. ‘It’s So Amazing’ 7 – 10 years by Robbie H. Harris is about eggs, sperm, birth, babies, and families in a comic style format.
  8. Let’s Talk About S-E-X’ 9 to 12 years and their parents by Planned Parenthood Mar Monte is a book about sexuality education.
  9. ‘Nonnie Talks About Sex and More’ 10-14 years by Alice M Burroughs and Mary Jo Jo Podgurski is a teenage book that’s inclusive and honest.
  10. ‘Tell Me’ 8-88 years by Katharina Von Der Gathen is what children really want to know about sexuality education bodies, sex and emotions.

Talking about sex is a ‘lifelong’ conversation and sex education books can empower and equip you to be the ‘go to parent’ all the time about all things sexuality education related.
